I hear the nerves all the time, and I get it. Trying sew ins for the first time can feel like a lot. Here’s the reassuring part: people come to me because I’m professional and I go above and beyond, and they say my work speaks for itself. Your first appointment is usually calm and hands-on, and most installs land in the 2–6 hour range depending on your hair, the look you want, and what prep is already done. This guide walks you through what to do before you arrive, what happens while you’re in my chair here in South Dayton, and how to take care of your style that first week so it stays looking fresh.
Before your sew in: clean hair, clear inspo, and a few small things that help
If you do one thing before your appointment, do this: wash your hair. More than one first-timer has mentioned that part directly, and it matters because a clean scalp helps the style sit better and feel better. I also want your hair detangled so we’re not wasting time fighting through knots.
Bring 2–3 reference photos that show the vibe you want, especially the parting and the overall fullness. People tell me they appreciate that I’m respectful of their wishes and I don’t push my own idea of what your hair “should” look like. Photos keep us on the same page, and then I’ll give you real suggestions if something needs a tweak for your hair length or density.
Quick prep checklist: clean scalp, detangled hair, a brush or comb you like, hair ties/clips, a bonnet or scarf for the ride home, and water or a snack if you’re booking a longer install.
And please tell me up front if you’re tender-headed or have sensitive edges. I’ve had tender-headed clients tell me they didn’t even need pain pills, and I take that seriously. Tension is something I can adjust. Suffering in silence is not the goal.
When you arrive in South Dayton: how the appointment usually flows (2–6 hours)
When you get here, I’ll start by looking at your hair as it is that day. If you’ve recently done a big chop, you’re not automatically “disqualified.” I’ve worked with someone coming in with a very short pixie who wasn’t sure it could even be gripped for braids, and we still got a gorgeous result. That check-in helps me decide the cleanest parting, how to protect your edges, and what grip makes sense for your length.
Then we get specific. We’ll look at your photos, talk through the look you want, and I’ll ask a couple of questions that save you headaches later: Do you like a flatter sew in or more volume? Do you need your edges babied? Do you want certain areas left out? One reviewer mentioned appreciating that I left out a bit of their edges instead of braiding them in, and that’s exactly the kind of detail I want you to speak up about. If you want less sideburn left out next time, tell me now, not after you’ve been living with it for a week.
During the install, you’ll notice the vibe stays pretty peaceful. People regularly mention the quiet space and fun conversation, and I try to keep it comfortable because you’re in the chair for a while. Most of the time, you’ll feel steady tension and some tugging, but you should not feel sharp pain, numbness, or that “my scalp is on fire” feeling. If you feel that, stop me right away. I can loosen a section and keep it moving.

The first 7 days after your sew in: keep it cute without doing the most
Right after your appointment, it’s normal to feel a little tightness, especially the first day or two. That said, tight doesn’t mean painful. If you get home and something feels like it’s pulling too hard, let me know quickly so we can talk through what you’re feeling.
For the first week, less is more. I generally recommend waiting 48 hours before washing, keeping your hands out of your hair, and using a light oil or leave-in spray on your scalp if it feels dry. Dayton weather can swing hard, humid summers and cold winters, so scalp moisture is one of those small things that keeps a protective style feeling good instead of itchy.
Two aftercare habits that save styles
- Sleep in a bonnet or scarf so friction doesn’t rough up the hair and edges.
- If you work out or sweat, focus on drying your scalp after. Dampness sitting too long is what usually starts the itch.
People often tell me they start getting compliments fast, and that’s great. Your job is to protect the install so it still looks good when the newness wears off.
My real first-timer advice: speak up early, and plan your timing
Here’s what makes a first appointment go smoothly: say what you want, and say what you don’t want. I’m big on respecting your wishes, and I’ll also give you suggestions that fit your haircare routine so you’re not stuck doing a lot of daily maintenance.
Also, block the time. Installs vary, and I’d rather you feel relaxed than rushed. If you’re coming from the University of Dayton area or hopping off I-75 to get to South Park near Deeds Avenue, give yourself a cushion so traffic and parking don’t start your day off stressed.
