Soft locks aftercare plan for the first 48 hours and first two weeks in Dayton OH

One of the biggest things people tell me after an appointment is how peaceful and quiet it felt to sit and get their hair done, and I want your soft locks to feel that easy at home too. Here’s the #1 rule: keep your soft locks dry and don’t over-handle them for the first 24 to 48 hours so the foundation can settle. That means no steamy showers on day one, no heavy oils, and no tight styles that tug at your edges.

First 24 to 48 hours: let the knots set (and leave your edges alone)

Soft locks look effortless, but the first two days decide how neat they stay. I generally recommend you treat your hair like it’s “setting.” Keep your hands out of it. If you’re tender-headed, this matters even more because over-touching can make you feel sore when you didn’t need to. I’ve had clients tell me they didn’t even need pain pills after their install, and the easiest way to keep that feeling going is to avoid extra tension right away.

Quick 48-hour checklist: Keep them dry, skip tight ponytails/buns, don’t add heavy product, and don’t pick at frizz or loose pieces.

Showering in Dayton humidity

Dayton summers get humid fast, so even if you’re not “washing, ” steam can still swell hair and cause early frizz. Use a shower cap, keep the water lukewarm, and try not to let the bathroom turn into a sauna. If your scalp gets itchy, pat (don’t rub) with a clean towel and let it air-dry.

Days 3 to 7: sweat, frizz, and the “don’t do too much” week

This is the week people start getting confident and then accidentally mess up a good install. Keep it simple. Light scalp care. Light styling. And please don’t start layering on creamy products trying to chase shine. I’ve had a client mention they didn’t love how shiny dipped ends looked on another style. With soft locks, the fix isn’t more product. It’s choosing lightweight, residue-free moisture and letting the hair move like it’s supposed to.

Working out after getting soft locks

Yes, you can work out, but manage the sweat. Use a clean sweatband or tie a silk scarf at the hairline. After your workout, blot your scalp and roots with a towel or paper towel and let everything air-dry fully. Don’t pile wet hair into a bun. If you sweat heavily, a quick cool rinse around the hairline can help, then dry right away.

Can you wash your hair with soft locs?

You can, but I usually want you to wait about 1 to 2 weeks before your first gentle wash unless I tell you otherwise. Early washing can loosen the neat look at the roots. When it’s time, keep it gentle and controlled: focus on the scalp, use diluted shampoo, and don’t scrub the lengths like loose natural hair.

A simple soft locs maintenance routine that actually holds up

Soft locs maintenance is mostly about protecting the install, keeping your scalp calm, and avoiding buildup. The goal is soft movement, not sticky shine. If you’re busy, in class at the University of Dayton, or commuting around South Dayton, you don’t need a long routine. You need a consistent one.

Night protection (non-negotiable)

Sleep in a satin bonnet or on a satin pillowcase. If you like them hanging, keep them contained so you’re not rubbing roots all night.

Moisture (light, weekly)

Use a water-based mist or a very light oil on the scalp about once a week. In Dayton winters, when the air is cold and dry, you might need a touch more often. Keep it light so your roots don’t get gummy.

Cleansing (every 1 to 3 weeks)

How active you are decides this. If you sweat a lot, you’ll need to cleanse sooner. If not, stretch it. Always dry thoroughly after.

If you want more context on protecting thin edges, I also break it down in soft locks for thinning edges. And if you’re comparing braid looks, our braid styling guide in South Dayton can help you choose a style that matches your lifestyle.

When to reach out to me (and when it’s normal)

A little tightness the first day can be normal. A mild itch as your scalp adjusts can be normal too. What I don’t want you to ignore is strong, lasting pain, bumps that feel irritated, or edges that feel like they’re being pulled. If something feels off, let me know early so we can fix it before it turns into breakage.
